User research
At the client's request for a website redesign, a website audit was an ideal starting point. It enabled me to thoroughly assess the site’s current state, revealing specific areas that needed improvement to better serve users and align with the organization’s goals.
Established in 2018, Project Art of Learning is a student-led nonprofit that offers complimentary one-on-one virtual tutoring services to K-12 students from underprivileged communities.
During the Spring Quarter of 2024, I had the opportunity to work with Project Art of Learning through Design for America (DFA), a student organization that teaches human-centered design skills to tackle social challenges. My team collaborated with the nonprofit to redesign their website, applying a user-centric approach to better meet the needs of their tutors, students, and supporters.

Our website aims to support tutors and students but currently struggles with navigation and clarity. Users have trouble distinguishing roles and finding services. How can we redesign the site to improve usability, including optimizing existing pages and adding features like an interactive map and curriculum page?

To ensure a user-centered approach in the redesign process, I created a user persona representing a typical student seeking tutoring services. This persona helped us focus on the core needs of students looking for academic support, guiding our design choices.
Student Persona: A student searching for a tutoring platform with a clear display of available subjects, detailed tutor profiles, and an intuitive, easy-to-use scheduling system for booking sessions.
To gain a deeper understanding of how users interacted with the existing Project Art of Learning website, we conducted user interviews. The insights gathered were then organized into an affinity map, categorizing user feedback into key themes. This process highlighted our main areas of concern, directly informing our redesign efforts to better address critical user needs and pain points.
I refined the information architecture because the website’s layout was cluttered and unintuitive, making navigation difficult. By condensing, renaming, and reorganizing pages, we created a more streamlined structure, allowing users to locate information more easily.
Before
After
Our redesign priorities focused on optimizing the use of space and addressing user pain points. To achieve these goals, we rearranged text, images, and interactive elements while significantly reducing text content. Testing was also conducted remotely with tutors over Zoom. I was able to observe participants’ interactions and had them “think aloud” as they navigated through a screen/prototype.

The First Ideas
After each round of user testing, I analyzed the feedback to identify recurring patterns and critical issues. This iterative process allowed me to make targeted design improvements that directly addressed user pain points and enhanced overall usability.

Iteration Learnings
In the high-fidelity stage, we developed polished prototypes to refine visual details, interactions, and content layout.

High-Fidelity Prototypes
For the final screens, we used Figma to build high-fidelity, interactive prototypes that captured the full design experience. These prototypes showcased the final look and feel, with all interactions and navigation elements in place
Final screens
I integrated an interactive map feature that enhances user experience by displaying the branch name and contact information whenever a pin is clicked.

Discovering New Skills!
This project marked my first true dive into the world of prototyping and design thinking! From initial concepts to creating interactive flows, it was an eye-opening journey into transforming ideas into tangible designs. Each step helped me grow my creative toolkit with skills I’ll carry forward in future projects. If we’d had more time, I’d have loved to dive even deeper, exploring more advanced prototyping techniques to bring our ideas to life with even richer detail.
The Art of Staying Connected
One of my biggest takeaways was the value of open and consistent communication—especially when the pace slowed or tasks felt unbalanced. Communication went beyond simple updates; it was about clarifying our shared vision and making sure everyone stayed in sync.
